An interesting subject. Some views from overseas.
As an aged HK Chinese, I must say that the keen competition for school places in HK has long been a thorny issue to all, including the parents, the schools, the education authority, etc. It's the necessary evil, as long as parents hold that good university education means good fortune, better marriage, happier life thereafter, etc. No doubt, parents always put their kids first, but「子女的快樂」could be set as a long-term goal, when they are required to choose between 子女的快樂 at an early age and 子女的good life after prolonged hard work at school. In fact, survey findings in USA indicate that U graduates earn more than high school leavers. Becker and Posner have discussed this thoroughly at their blog.
"明明讀大學不用爭崩頭" may not be true, as the HKG provides U places to only 18% of the student population, while the no. of those eligible students (i.e. those with 4 non-language subjects passed together with Chinese and Englsh at Level 2 for registration for AL exam) is more than 40% (off hand figure, pending verification). In UK and USA, entrance into world-class U is by no means easy. Only in European countries, 「子女的快樂」is guaranteeded, as 讀大學is a welfare for all young men (and sometimes the middle-aged)and is really不用爭崩頭.
No pain no gain. No need to worry too much for kids; but the point is, they should be taught by highly professional and enthusiastic teachers. Sad to say, I fail to find many in HK that could ease the mind of parents.
