    Alex

    Alex﹕

(1) state or express (sth) in a very controlled way;(2) state that ( a number, etc) is less than it really is。

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    Alex, 我最後一段只是「玩嘢」,請勿認真。

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    第一才子會唔會好似第一健筆咁寫文章向Alex兄政謝呢?

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    潘國森寫了本《Critique on陶傑》,有一部分是挑剔他翻譯鍾逸傑的Feeling the Stones,有許多錯誤真的很難相信他會犯,因為他自詡英文好,例如serviceman譯作公務員。如果不是英文實際上麻麻,就是太多外務,翻譯態度認真。

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    睇完閣下洋洋數百字, 也不過是因為人家用了一個”通用的誤譯”的錯誤大事鞭撻, 這是不是另一種精神勝利法呢?

  • using Mozilla Firefox Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Windows Windows XP

    Yam:可否解釋閣下所謂「精神勝利法」是甚麼的一回事呢?謝謝!

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    人家都从不认做才子, 你们为何强加光环在他头上? 是羡慕还是妒忌?

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows 2000

    17號仔炳人兄倒說得有道理, 這也是陶生聰明之處0 或者佢多搞作地盤多, 分心都唔定, 除了眾所周知的地盤外, 佢又在港大開壇講通識, 聽講遲下連公務員培訓都撈埋,教mut唔知,離不開中文或者英文卦. 供職在TOM,可能都會收到內幕料,真係幾發.但正所謂文章憎命達,發都係寫唔出好野啦. 幫忙或者幫閒都怕且仲得.

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

  • using Mozilla Firefox Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Windows Windows XP

Well, I don’t think it has anything to do with Alex’s ego. He makes a point and the point is well justified. What’s wrong with that?

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows 2000

    退一萬步來說, 周到人犯錯而產生快感, 都唔見得有mut唔妥.

    Re: 24

    難得Alex 認真查究,都唔明點解咁都叫無知!?有錯唔知唔認兼唔准人批評更是一種深層無知兼無聊的行為。

Has anyone bothered to check what the Britons do with the Chinese translation of Greenwich?

    http://www.rog.nmm.ac.uk/
then click the Chinese flag on the right hand side.
    http://lvyou168.cn/travel/uk/nmm/

Although the site in Chinese looks very unofficial with the lvyou168.cn URL, it is at least from the official site of the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    比較認同Yam的講法。

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

    “Understatement 都解錯就真是有點不配才子稱號﹐解錯比讀錯嚴重得多。潛台詞是不是應該比較接近 undertone 或 undercurrent﹖ ”

Somebody above asked this question, actually “潛台詞” should be translated as “subtext” (or I should say “subtext” should be translated into “潛台詞” in Chinese).

About that To Git guy, I really cannot stand him!! He really hasn’t much of a clue about British history or literature and yet he self-styles himself as this great intellectual!! The pomposity just makes me puke! In relation to his degree in Eng. Lit, it’s really not that hard to get a BA in this subject in the UK at all. Anyway, where did he get his degree from? I don’t imagine it’s from any of the top-tier colleges.

Having said that though, I agree broadly with Czar above who said that “我覺得這樣的指責很無聊, 我幾年前往英國格林威治大學留學,local讀’gren-nich’,唔讀’green-nich’,但我曾在當地觀光巴士上聽過廣播讀’green-wich’,所以我認為你的指責只流於’何文匯式批評’.” Greenwich should be pronounced as “Gren-nich” rather than “Green-nich” – not only is this the appropriate pronunciation in British English (as pronounced by my Oxbridge-educated lecturers), but also in American English (I lived in Greenwich Village in Manhattan for about a year). In any case, he only used to the conventional Chinese translation of the place-name rather than actually pronounced it as “Green-wich” in English, so the criticism above is a bit of much ado about nothing. There are way more worthier targets in To Git’s “pearls of wisdom” to be sniping him about, and unfortunately this isn’t really one of them.

  • using Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows Windows XP

Oops, please delete the extraneous “to” in the second last sentence to read “… he only used the conventional…”.
